Why Support WordBRIDGE?
Founded in 1994 by Dr. Richard A. Rice, WordBRIDGE was hosted through 2003 at Eckerd College, St. Petersburg, Florida. Modeled after the Playwrights Laboratory at the Sundance Institute established by Robert Redford and David Kranes at Sundance, Utah. WordBRIDGE provides a “bridge” for gifted collegiate playwrights between the private, theoretical, and academic aspects of playwriting and the real world of theatre.
Working in a laboratory setting, our dependence on individual support to complete our work is essential. We believe in creating a supportive, generous, collaborative environment where playwrights have the freedom to explore their script in an environment free from the pressures of production. The generous support of individuals is what makes this work possible.
The WordBRIDGE Process
Nominations are solicited in the spring from collegiate theatre departments from around the country. Six to eight plays are chosen for the two-week WordBRIDGE workshop. Each playwright is assigned a production team consisting of a director, dramaturg, actors and other related resource artists. Working intimately with the playwright, each production team is available to explore different perspectives and experiment with new ideas for the playwright. The workshop includes daily rehearsals, readings, improvisations, script analyses and if applicable, sessions with related dance, music and scenic design artists. The playwright continually rewrites and reworks the script following these daily sessions. At the end of the workshop period, each play is presented as a reading for the assembled WordBRIDGE company and its progress and process discussed and critiqued.
WordBRIDGE is also committed to promoting these works, when ready, through national referral systems for stage, film and television.
WordBRIDGE Playwrights' Laboratory needs your support. For a donation of $750, you can sponsor one artist for the entire two weeks of the lab! Even $20 has a great deal of mileage for us. The cost for the printing of scripts alone takes its toll on funding.
